Adventure Travel Taghia

Located 200 km east of Marrakech, high in the Moroccan Atlas Mountains within the M’Goun Massif, Taghia is a small Berber village surrounded by canyons with walls up to 1000m high. A tiny village in a valley at almost 2000m above sea level, dotted with orchards and water canals, Taghia has no phones, no internet and no cars, so access is by foot or with mules.

The scenery is spectacular and the mountains and their slopes are a patchwork of yellows, ochres, oranges, reds, purples, and greens. The inhabitants of the village are friendly and welcoming to outsiders, and its remote location makes you feel like you’re on another planet.

The area was first climbed in the 70’s, but has been kept a secret spot until very recently, and still only receives less than a thousand visitors a year. There are all kinds of routes available, bolted and unbolted, generally of medium to high difficulty, and the possibilities here are literally endless. The rock is limestone of unbelievable quality, possibly the best we’ve ever seen, and the excellent climbing is generally on long, multi-pitch bolted routes.

In addition to the climbing there’s plenty of great places to trek, some 4000m plus peaks to ascend, and even the opportunity to go canyoneering if you’d like – Luis has been here many times and can personalise any trip to your requirements. This is a fantastic adventure with a real expedition feel, yet still only a few short hours away from Málaga.

Toubkal Climbing

At 4167m, Jbel Toubkal is the highest peak in Morocco and North Africa. A technically straightforward route in summer, perfect for beginners or intermediate level, with no ropes neither too much rock climbing experience necessary, the ascent is still quite physically demanding, especially taking into consideration that the high altitude will slow your body down.

In wintertime the snowline drops to 1500m and turns the route into a more classic alpine-style climb, with crampons and ice axe required.

An expedition to Morocco leaves no one unimpressed – whilst only 15km from Spain, the change of culture is overwhelming, and a trip here is highly recommended. The colours, smells, customs of the people, the local dishes, the art, the architecture, Marrakech, the desert; this is an adventure like no other and a real feast for the senses.
